Kyanite Fact Sheet

Kyanite comes from the original name of the mineral 'Cyanite'. Also called 'Disthene', the name 'Kyanite' is derived from Greek word Kyanos which means 'blue'. Found in shades of vibrant blue, green, white, gray, black, brown and a rare pink, blue Kyanite is the most common color for the gem stone. It is rarely to find a Kyanite gemstone with color that is even and uniform throughout the gem stone. In most cases, the color of this gem stone will be blotchy or appear in streaks. Good quality blue Kyanite can resemble a gorgeous blue sapphire.

Being a rare gem and also brittle in appearance, Kyanite is used mainly for earring, pendants and brooches. The gemstone itself has a dual hardness. Cut along the axis of the crystal, its hardness is 4.5 on the mohs scale, however when you turn it at a 45 degree angle from that axis, the crystal is almost as hard as a Diamond (7.5 on the mohs scale). These attributes make the stone quite a challenge for faceting and cutting.

Kyanite is also believed to have certain metaphysical properties. There are two gems that never need cleansing and Kyanite is one of them. The other is citrine. It has ability to keep the mind calm, be capable of getting rid of mental and spiritual confusion, and dissolve anger and frustration. The associated zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus & Libra.

The main sources of Kyanite are The United States, Brazil, Switzerland, Russia, Serbia, India, Nepal, Burma(Myanma) and Kenya. Kyanite deposited in the US is large and both low grade and high gem quality. Very good gem quality Kyanite has also been mined in Nepal with unknown volumes.
